Case study: B2B SaaS websites and landing pages analysis

I analyzed 1 half-unicorn, 1 midmarket company, and 3 a16z startup websites to show you what they’re doing right and what they’re doing wrong. So you can copy the right things (or find issues in your own website)

My highlights are not criticisms. I like these companies and their products. These breakdowns are made purely to show things that are good and things that can be improved.

Descript - $600M company

Descript is an AI co-editor for videos. And pretty successful at that! Their website is huge and full of resources, a blog is stylish and packed with content. But here’s the part that they miss:(And this is applicable to you, even if your product isn’t a video editing software)

Generic newsletter opt-ins don’t convert nearly as well as your product deserves.

Replacing them with a valuable lead magnet (in this case something like a Viral Editing Guide) is a quick win for your list growth.

And list growth = new customers & educated userbase.

So instead of hoping that offering weekly tips is enough for people to give their email address, why not offer them a specific article-related resource that is clearly valuable AND still related to the end product?

This also serves as a qualifier because they opted-in to get specific results, not just a newsletter (no additional information).

And if you have a unique lead magnet for each of the top performing articles, you’d get significantly more subscribers (+segmentation).

Even more importantly - these resources and guides can (and should) be promoted outside of the blog itself. That’s one of the best ways to get leads.

Tracksuit - midmarket with something rare

Tracksuit is a brand tracking software with a unique thing for midmarket companies - they actually have pretty good lead magnets on their site. With dedicated landing pages and explained benefits.

Even though their optin forms are big, they are surprisingly good, which is rare (in most cases long forms are worse than short ones)

Like having this free calculator is awesome:

Extra points for having a whole page for this resource!

They clearly understand that free tools and resources can bring customers.

But it looks like they’re only using them for SEO, not as a conversion mechanism in other articles. This is an opportunity to improve.

All these articles without CTAs are a low-hanging fruit to increase conversions & trust with prospects.

Amdahl - awesome use of specific numbers

Amdahl is a context layer for GTM AI usage. They allow you to save crazy amounts of tokens while INCREASING the quality of the context. Their showcase of these benefits is very well made. But some things on the site require more work, like my favorite - email flow (newsletter)

This specific valuable comparison is great:

Objection handling is great (as long as these are the actual problems that customers ask/say in conversations)

But some things should be improved:

acceler8 - 1 of 50,000

acceler8 is a workforce intelligence & planning AI for Fortune 500. They recently took first place in Deel’s Pitch competition of over 50,000 companies.

Their website messaging and placement of elements are pretty good for targeting F500. But again, as it often happens, lead capture flow and transitional CTAs deserve improvement.
