Benefits of walking and strategy for business

If I ask you “what business activities exist” you would probably think operations, distribution, product, hiring… basically daily fires you need to put out.

But there are 2 things that are often forgotten or not treated as “real work“ (and that’s a mistake)

Walking outside is one of the greatest things you can do in business.

It’s what gamers call “overpowered”

Because it puts your brain in a different environment. And environment is everything.

Have you ever had crazy tons of ideas coming to your head one after another at seemingly random times of the day? When you’re trying to sleep, or when you’re doing chores, or when you’re just walking?

That’s not an accident, it’s called brain’s default mode network.

Whole set of brain regions that activate when you’re resting.

For almost 3 years I’ve been walking outside every single day, sometimes many times each day.

These walks were really good, whether I wanted to think about business, or try to relax and take a break.

Some of the greatest ideas came to me while walking. I came up with solutions to plenty of very hard problems because of walking. And it’s not that I was in some crazy inspiring environment, no.

I’m not the only one who sees business value in walking.

Maddi Holman uses it for weekly strategy work:

Revisiting what you’re doing every week is another powerful tool for business growth.

Because it forces you to set the right priorities. It makes you say NO to things. It makes you set meaningful goals and adjust your process when goals are not met.

Project management world uses the word Sprint for something similar, but then they add useless activities like daily standups. And these things happens in the office or office-like environment. Ugh.

I prefer to see this as strategic activity for founders, A-team, partners, etc. Once a week is the right cadence for it.

And doing it on a walk? Sounds awesome!
